From Hobby to Art: My Eight-Year Baking Journey in Mumbai
Baking has always been more than just a hobby for me. My journey began eight years ago in Mumbai, thanks to my husband, who saw my artistic potential and motivated me to channel it into baking. I started with basic baking classes, and since then, my passion has only grown. One key lesson I've learned is that baking is all about trial and error. There will be failures, but persistence is key. Following recipes is essential, but don't be afraid to experiment, especially with cakes. It's fun to see the unique results of your creativity. And remember, if it doesn't turn out, you still have a bowl of cake batter to eat!
My favorite recipe is a dark chocolate cake with fresh strawberries or raspberries. The combination is divine. Many of my new recipes come from customer suggestions, inspiring new designs and combinations.
Challenges are part of the process, but preplanning and research help. One memorable mishap was mixing up two orders for a baby shower. Imagine the surprise when the chocolate lover got a vanilla cake and vice versa! It was embarrassing, but both customers loved the flavors and remain loyal to this day.
The baking industry is always evolving, and Instagram is my go-to for staying updated with the latest trends. Healthier baking options like vegan, sugar-free, flour-free, and eggless recipes cater to different dietary needs. Running a successful baking business involves careful calculation of time, supplies, raw materials, effort, and skill. Managing customer expectations is crucial. Loyal customers know what to expect, and new customers are informed that while designs may not be 100% exact, I strive for 95% accuracy in design and 100% in flavor. As I tell my customers, "I'm a baker, not a magician, but I'll do my best!"
Baking is an incredible journey filled with creativity, challenges, and immense satisfaction. Cultural influences add unique touches, and combining recipes from different cultures can result in extraordinary creations. While I’m still exploring sustainable practices, I focus on high-quality ingredients and customer feedback. The future of baking is bright, with new talents and innovations emerging every day. I plan to continue giving my best, bringing smiles to my customers with happy, sweet memories. If you’re passionate about baking, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. Just remember, even if your cake flops, you can always call it a "deconstructed dessert."
